At Green Star we are obsessed with identifying and implementing only the most efficient and cost effective insulation measures. Most insulation products work great. The trick is to identify the best application for each product. When it comes to insulation the quality of the installation is absolutely critical to overall performance. Insulation, air sealing and duct sealing are the most important and cost effective ways to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.
The savings are through the roof so far, no pun intended!!! Electricity savings = $500 and Oil & Pellets combined = $1,275 ** Not to mention the $425 rebate from the state… So at $2,200 (savings) that’s greater than 50% of the job paying for itself in the 1st year. (First year update from our insulation job that was completed in October 2011)
Hey Bruce, It’s in the 30’s outside, and it’s 73 in here. That’s from 3 computers and the lights. Mitchell just came for their oil delivery, and I took 58 gallons. Better than 150+.
We woke up to 69 degrees after this big storm last night even though the thermostat was only set at 67. We turned it down to 63 this morning at 8am. It is now after 11am and it is still at 69! Hasn’t moved a single degree in freezing weather with 20mph gusts in over 2 hours! You guys are miracle workers! Thanks again. Can’t wait for the next oil bill!
I did the basic energy audit. Green Star came in and did a fantastic job with their process of finding the energy leaks. They then proceeded to seal the cracks along the foundation wall top, where the cement meets wood… They discovered (or uncovered) a hidden opening in my forced air duct work return that was causing huge inefficiency in my heat/ac system. This was a new system a contractor had installed just 18 months prior. Thank you Green Star. You did a really great job. The entire process took 3 or so hours – for a 3-man crew!
How much did the final cost compare to the original estimate? Right on How does the value of the work compare to the price? I got exactly what I paid for What did you like most about this contractor? Friendly, realistic, easy, and fast communication What did you like least about this contractor? I can’t think of anything.
Ok, so I’ve had to re-program my thermostats to lower temperatures and shorter heating cycles because the air sealing and attic insulation have made such a difference, even in my leaky old home. I don’t usually look forward to getting utility bills but I will be very interested to see the change compared to the same period last year. I’ll let you know! I’ve been very busy spreading the word at various Earth Day events, especially on behalf of Westchester County. High performance insulation and air sealing are always first on my list of actions to take.
Green Star did air sealing and insulation in our attic and our entire house. They did blower door testing both before and after the work and the house is now a “tight” house. We saw a 25% reduction in the air infiltration into our house. We did this to improve our home’s energy efficiency and to reduce our energy costs. The crew was very professional. They arrived when they said they would and they paid attention to details throughout the job. We feel the job was well done and we would hire this company again.
Green Star, I wanted to write back with all the praise of how your people performed all the work that was performed on our home. we had worked hard ts come up with a great plan beforehand and Green Star worked with us to make it a reality. Nothing but 100% and beyond!!! It has been three months post work completion and we couldn’t be happier with the results. My initial energy savings calculations over the course of one year might be blown away already. put it this way, I don’t think our oil tank will need any filling this winter (l have estimated only 80-85 gallons of oil have been used since Mid October). with this high performance insulation job done, our energy savings on oil, electricity and wood pellets are already showing dividends. I feel there will be more great results to come in 2013 and beyond, I wanted to say thank you Green Star!!! Sincerely (warm and cozy),
While working with our architect to design an Energy Star Rated, passive solar home, we knew that super insulation was going play a critical role. Involving Green Star Energy Solutions during the design process allowed time for discussion of “problem areas” of thermal bridging and air infiltration how best to address them. From basement to attic the Greenstar crew was thorough and professional. This January’s cold spell was the first real test and the house preformed warmly. On sunny days when outside temperatures were in the teens, without any mechanical heating on, the house stayed in the mid 60’s. As anyone who owns an older home knows, they are energy hogs and are tricky to insulate. I own two, one hundred year old houses in downtown Bethel, each of which contains two apartments. I have been working with Green Star for a number of years to systematically improve the R-Value of both homes and update to high efficiency mechanicals. Doing so not only improves the long term value of my investment in these homes but also improves the comfort of my tenants and reduces their financial burden of heating and cooling costs. Green Star’s installers are knowledgeable, personable and seem to enjoy their work, knowing they are making an environmental difference and making people comfortable in their homes.
I wanted to write and give you our first year assessment of the Fujitsu air source heat pump system you installed last summer now that one of the coldest winters I can ever remember in Ct has ended. To summarize you installed a 4-ton Fujitsu heat pump condenser(outside unit), 2 indoor air handlers and 1 distribution box in our home. This system was tied into our existing duct work. The system this replaced for heating was the original hot air oil fired furnace and for cooling was the original Lennox A/C system. Let me start off by saying the fabrication work done by Josh on the new system to integrate this into our existing duct work was outstanding. He knows his business and he did everything as if it were his own home. The original furnace and air handler was removed and this alone freed up significant space in our basement. The new indoor air handlers ( one in the basement for main floor living space and one in the attic for second floor bedroom space) are small, sleek and extremely quiet compared to the old system. One of the first things we have noticed is that the air flow of the new system is quiet, even and steady to the point that most times you do not even realize the system is working. We have noticed that the heated air is not as dry as with the oil fired furnace system and the temperatures maintained in the house are much more consistent over the course of the day/night. We have found this improved our health this winter compared to prior winters. As we have experimented with temperature settings we have found that setting the thermostat on one temperature and leaving it at that setting 24/7 has produced the best results and the most savings in terms of our electric bill vs oil costs. To that point about savings on energy costs vs oil,m we are seeing about a $250-300 per month savings during the coldest month of January and February. This is consistent with the projections/estimates we discussed with you prior to the system installation. Our assessment of heating performance during the months of December – April. This winter was the coldest in a very long time and there were many days this winter in the single digits. I should point out we have no backup heat system so this heat pump was it. Does it work to zero and below? I would say if the outdoor temps are 15 degrees and warmer there is no problem with the system producing enough heat for the house. When the temps get and stay in the single digits the system does work hard at trying to maintain a temperature of 68 and for the most part it can do that but supplementing the system with auxiliary heating coils built right into the air handlers might be a good idea for people that like the house very warm. These can be turned on and off only as needed on the coldest days. In summary our feelings are we made the right choice. The system is performing as you said it would and it has gotten us off oil and using a system that is far more energy efficient. We will save the cost of the system in 3-4 years at the current rate, but besides that we have a system that is ultra quiet, super consistent , superior for health reasons, expandable to hang a wall unit off the same outdoor condenser in our basement and virtually maintenance free. We look forward to continuing to work with you on our heating and cooling needs.
